Books/Magazines

The books we feature here are books that we find to be particularly fascinating for one reason or another.  These are books you might never come across in your home quilt shop (although we do aspire to be that shop) or other book stores.  We love the search for the innovative and uncommon book.  Some are books that are not brand new, but titles which gave us the desire to try something new.  We recall clearly the excitement we felt the first time we made lace with our sewing machine using random dyed thread and water dissolvable film!  We hope to inspire and move you to expand your options as a creative quilter as well.  And we must add that though we know you can go to some large internet super store to purchase these books at a discount, our hope is that you’ll favor us with your purchase since we so lovingly do all the foot work for you.

Caliente Quilts by Priscilla Bianchi is an inspiring book for those who crave bold color and design in quilts. While the author gives clear directions for 10 breathtaking quilt projects ranging from wall hangings to bed quilts, we find the introductory section of the book absolutely fascinating. Priscilla Bianchi narrates the fascinating history of Guatemalan textiles which is liberally illustrated with brilliant photos of textiles and the peoples of Guatemala. If for no other reason, this book is a fantastic resource for ideas as a jumping off point for your own designs.

The Uncommon Quilter
Yes, we know, you will not find a quilt to make for the new baby in this book, however, please keep reading. Jeanne Williamson decided to challenge herself to make one small quilt a week over the course of seven years, and without restricting herself to any one type of material. Most of her quilts were made of found objects - ranging from fabrics to leaves, cupcake wrappers, newspaper, maps - you name it! These little quilts are intriguing to say the least, and we believe that if you give a similar experiment a try, we believe you will find, as did Jeanne, that your creativity will indeed flourish.

Free-Style Quilts is one of the two books that pushed us over the edge from quite traditional quilts - which we still love and treasure - into the more free wheeling world of Very Exciting, Daring, "Oh, Heavens did I really do that?" quilting. Susan Carlson just looks at fabrics differently than most of the rest of us do - in a quite liberating way. Well, in our humble opinion. Susan generously shares secret after secret, until one believes, knows, that this is something that, yes, you can do also. Directions for creating your own little works of art are clear, easy to follow, and there are just scads of photos of Susan's original art work. Shave a bit of money out of the grocery budget, darling, and do yourself a good deed by purchasing this book!

The Art of Fabric Collage is the other book that literally rocked our known world of quilting. Rosemary Eichorn is another fabric artist who views the stacks of fabrics in shops with a fresh eye. While her creativity is engaged with using fabrics to design the most delicious wearable art, there is nothing keeping you from incorporating some of her techniques into your own quilts. Perhaps just a center square that sings out from that quilt you've been thinking about? Of course, you can apply Rosemary's principles of design using any of the wonderful clothing patterns that are available in great quilt shops these days. We can just imagine your glorious entry into the restaurant to meet.....?

The Apron Book will surely stir up some fond memories of mothers, aunts, and grandmothers in the kitchen. I can clearly recall my grandmother dressed up for Christmas dinner, with the sheer organdy apron that featured glittered holiday designs! You'll be enchanted with the history of aprons and how they've evolved over the centuries. There are more aprons in this inspiring book than you can shake a stick at. You'll find patterns for four different designs, of which there seem to be endless variations - and all easy to sew. At the back of this little bargain of a book, you find a tissue pattern for the basic bib pattern. Have fun!
Price: $16.95, hardcover

Quilts in the Sun is Kaffe Fassett's latest collection of quilt patterns for Rowan. This book includes 20 original quilt designs by Kaffe, along with designers Roberta Horton, Mary Mashuta, Liza Prior Lucy, Pauline Smith, Brandon Mably, Amy Butler, and others. The photos were shot in Portugal, and the settings are magically enchanting. You know how some pattern books have what seem like a dud or two? Well, the "Birds", as the ladies of Yellow Bird Art are known, are unanimous in their agreement that there isn't a dud to be found in this book. We had a difficult time picking just one we liked the best.... although the Chelsea Quilt was a strong favorite. You will not be disappointed with this book.

Collaborative Quilting includes 256 pages of glorious, blazing color photos featuring 33 quilts Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran collaborated on together. The two quilt designers' goal was to bring the best of both of their work together in a new body of work with Freddy as the colorist and Gwen as the designer. The book shows Freddy's studio and her quilts, and Gwen's studio and her quilts. This book is a coffee table book showing full page color pictures of 96 quilts. It also has an innovative how-to section, with simple directions on how to make all the "parts" used in these collaborative quilts. If you've been holding back on purchasing this book - don't! The Smithsonian thought enough of this book to feature it in their gift shop.

Note: The original Uniontown Square paper pattern has been discontinued as it is now part of Sue Spargo’s new CD, 'Folk-Art Dreams.'  At this time, the only way to get the Uniontown Square pattern is via this CD, however, we will still carry the paper Greenbrier, Ginger Grove, Mercer Lane and 12 Pin Keepers patterns.

Sue Spargo's Folk Art Dreams ~ Wow! Sue is one of our favorite designers. She has a brilliant sense of color use and design. This CD by The Electric Quilt Company contains the designs for four of Sue's quilt designs: Greenbrier, Mercer Lane, Uniontown Square and Ginger Grove. If you purchased the four pattern books separately, it would cost $72.00. But this CD doesn't stop there - you get the design for the wall hanging, Birdsong, plus the pin keeper designs from her pin keeper of the month club. There is also a video interview with Sue and you'll be able to watch how Sue embroiders and embellishes her wonderful quilts.
